Spanish Foreign Language Experience Program (FLEX)

Chappell Elementary School offers excellent opportunities for the students of the Ravenswood and Bowmanville neighborhoods and beyond. Chappell participates in the CPS World Language Magnet Program. Because of this, K-8 students who do not live in our attendance area are able to apply for available seats through the CPS Options for Knowledge program.

Starting in Kindergarten, all Chappell Knights receive Spanish instruction as part of their weekly enrichment classes. Our Spanish curriculum is designed to introduce students to the Spanish language in a fun and engaging way, fostering listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.  Through engaging lessons and collaborative and interactive activities, games, songs, and simple conversations, students gain a basic understanding of common phrases, greetings, and vocabulary.

Our Spanish curriculum focuses on building a solid foundation in language, promoting confidence in speaking and comprehension while also encouraging cultural awareness. Students have the opportunity to explore the language by learning about the diverse countries and cultures where Spanish is spoken. This exploration helps to deepen their appreciation for the language and its global significance. Our unique Spanish curriculum helps students develop an appreciation for world languages, global awareness, and cultural appreciation, preparing students to be well rounded, global citizens.

K-2

Our students get a fun introduction to basic Spanish! Students learn fundamental vocabulary and phrases like greetings, colors, numbers, animals, and community. These early building blocks help set a foundation for future language learning.

3-5

Students take their Spanish skills to the next level and transition from basic exposure to practical, real-world language application. Building on their K-2 foundational vocabulary, students are focused on essential grammar and conversational skills.

6-8

Having mastered the foundational grammar from grades 3-5, the focus now shifts to expanded vocabulary and more complex sentence structures related to thematic topics.  Students work towards mastery of multiple verb tenses, developing conversational fluency, and in depth exploration of Spanish-speaking cultures.
